It also includes a durable waterproof housing, which will protect the camera down to depths of 197 feet (or 60 meters.) Here’s an overview of the HERO3 Black Edition from GoPro themselves:Īnd if you care to check out some footage, look below, then go into full screen 1080p mode for the ultimate experience.

The camera has full Wi-Fi control support, and can be operated with an iOS or Android app – or the included keychain Wi-Fi remote (a $79.99 value). It can also capture 12 megapixel stills at up to 30fps, and even has a razor-sharp 4K mode – though it is limited to 15fps. It actually supports many other modes as well, listed below:

The HERO3 can capture 1080p video at a full 60 frames-per-second, and can also shoot 4:3 1440p video at 48fps, or 720p at 120fps, and a DVD+ quality 848×480, 240fps mode for slow-mo shots. It’s also got an improved lens, designed to reduce distortion, and offers selection between ultra-wide, medium and narrow fields-of-view. GoPro claims the camera shoots video at twice the resolution and speed as the HERO2, and captures stills 3 times as fast. Taking a page from Apple’s playbook, they’re packing more capability into a smaller package. The HERO3 Black Edition is 30% smaller and 25% lighter than previous models, but that doesn’t mean it’s less powerful. At the top of the heap is the HERO3 Black Edition, a gadget that will likely be topping many Christmas lists this year. As the dominant player in the action cam space, GoPro doesn’t look like it will be resting on its laurels anytime soon.

It's a great camera for sports where you normally can't safely take pictures. This week, GoPro revealed its new HERO3 series of action cameras, and this batch could definitely give the competition a run for their money. But overall, the key features are outstanding. It would be even cooler if I could upload to YouTube with this thing. Other features like wireless streaming of files would be nice to preview footage after a dive. The wi-fi feature seems underdeveloped- its only uses are for connecting to the GoPro app on phones/tablets and pairing with the wireless remote. Because there are only scroll-down and select buttons, changing options can sometimes take more time than it should. I have the camera zip-tied to a key chain retractor which I hang off of my BCD (diving vest). I ended up buying a GoPole because none of the official mounting accessories satisfied my needs and my video has gotten much more stable. It sometimes has a greenish tinge but I have been very impressed with its performance both pointing at forwards as I swim and at macro distances underwater. California has murky, dark water and I was worried the camera wouldn't be able to cope with low light levels, but it has performed admirably. Overall I love this thing and it has been wonderful to share my time underwater with family and friends. The K-Edge mount is way more money but it's a much better solution in the long run. Not to mention the plastic feels cheap and is pretty pliable when given enough force. If you do get one and need a mount I'd recommend looking into 3rd party options, at least for bikes. You don't have a lot of options and the screw caps are huge which can impede mounting options. The included waterproof case is a nice bonus too! Battery life isn't ideal, somewhere around 90 minutes to two hours depending on settings, but it's not terrible either. My one gripe with the GoPro is the hardware that comes with it for mounting is pretty terrible. Audio recording is about what you'd expect from a device this small with such a tiny mic. With that out of the way:I think the GoPro Hero3 is a very good camera that delivers pretty impressive image quality for something so small. My use case with the GoPro was more of an insurance policy while riding my bike over looking to record for sharing videos, so my review may vary a bit.
